Honor 20 Pro vs. OnePlus 7 Pro: not a difficult choice

The panorama of smart phones with an excellent price-performance ratio has recently radically changed. Although OnePlus, whose name has long been associated with low prices, decides to offer its current flagship for more than 700 euros, Honor immediately fell victim to the political conflict between Huawei and the United States. But if we focused on their flagship smartphones, which one would you buy between the OnePlus 7 Pro and the Honor 20 Pro?

Determining which of these two smartphones is the best is definitely not easy, especially since we were not able to rate the Honor 20 Pro. However, we had the opportunity to try it for a while, and, of course, we will update this comparison as soon as we receive the test module.

Touch of extravagance

It seems that even the world of smartphones should be as eccentric as possible or at least original. Extravagance helps users to better remember a particular device. But in a world where everything is copied, being original is never easy ...

Honor has long decided to stand out among other manufacturers through a hole in the screen, starting with Honor View20, and now it can be found on other devices of other brands, such as, for example, Samsung. The advantage is clearly the rejection of the cut, but the disadvantage, of course, is the presence of a hole in the display.

Note: HONOR 20 series devices shown in this article are demo versions, which may differ in appearance and performance from the final versions.

The Honor 20 Pro also has a hole for the camera in the screen.

OnePlus was inspired by its related brands, which are also members of the BBK Electronics group. Here you can also find a frontal pop-up camera, similar (in its work, but not in form) to the decision made by OPPO for the Reno 10x Zoom. Interestingly, OnePlus decided to place a fingerprint sensor under the display, while Honor chose a more classic solution.

In addition, both smartphones have a very modern design in general. First of all, many people will like the back: the colors chosen by the two manufacturers are really fantastic, especially the gradients of the Honor device, created thanks to Dynamic Holographic Design technology.

Some differences are obvious.

To notice one of the main differences, just take a look at the two data tables. To justify a cheaper price, Honor does without an OLED screen. This is still an excellent panel, but it is not at all at the level of the OnePlus 7 Pro AMOLED display, especially since it can support higher resolution (QHD +) and 90 Hz update frequency.

Four cameras are used on the rear panel of the Honor: 16-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens, 48-megapixel Sony IMX586, 8-megapixel and, finally, the latest 2-megapixel, used exclusively for macro mode.

The back of the OnePlus 7 Pro is equipped with three sensors: the main one again is the Sony IMX586 48MP, followed by the ultra-wide 16-megapixel sensor and the 8-megapixel telephoto lens. Unfortunately, not having both smartphones available, we cannot compare them from this point of view, but we will not miss the opportunity to update the article as soon as possible.

Both devices run Android 9 Pie: Honor and use Magic UI, while OnePlus uses the increasingly popular OxygenOS. We know for sure that the OnePlus 7 Pro will receive an update for Android Q, although the same cannot be said about the Honor 20 Pro, which is in an unpleasant deadlock because of the trade war between the US and China.

High performance on both sides

Both Honor and OnePlus use high-performance SoCs, respectively, Kirin 980 and Snapdragon 855. There is practically nothing to say about productivity: both guarantee daily work without hesitation.

Both smartphones also have a 4000 mAh battery, which they can control thanks to their excellent software optimization. In terms of battery life, the Honor 20 Pro definitely benefits from a lower resolution display. However, in OnePlus 7 Pro you can always switch to FHD + resolution and 60 Hz update frequency to increase battery life.

As for charging, the OnePlus 7 Pro has its own 30 W Warp Charge, while the Honor 20 Pro is “only” 22,5 W.

Now the question is ...

Which of these two smartphones should I buy? At the moment, the answer is easy, especially if you live in the United States, because Honor 20 Pro is not available for purchase, and OnePlus 7 Pro can be bought almost everywhere in all its variants. However, Honor has just stated that Honor 20 Pro will come to Europe for 599 euros, so if you live there, then the competition will be a little more interesting.
